Does it make you sad?

Two times recently, a friend has decided not to read or not to finish a book I really like -- “Nation” by Terry Pratchett. Does it make you sad when friends reject or don’t care for a book that you really like? Usually it doesn’t bother me. I recognize that everyone has different tastes, and I certainly don’t enjoy every book that my friends and family like. But on occasion, I feel a little sting when someone won’t even give a book a chance. I don’t hold it against them; I just wish they could have the same experience with the book that I had when I read it.

How do you feel when someone dislikes or won’t read a book that you love?

  1. Hi sarah_canary! Greetings from a Readers'Paradise backslider - thyrkas. I just wanted to say that your blog is lovely, and I really like your main topic - books : )

I also have experienced friends' dislike of a book that I have suggested or given them. The biggest moment of shock came when a friend from a book group who had read the entire Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy with us,told me that she had burned all three books as soon as we had finished discussing them! I was speechless! She said she had disliked them from the start, and couldn't think of a single person who would want to read them, so she burned them. Sigh. I felt especially sad about it becasue it was my suggestion to read the trilogy. Such is life, yes?
I also have a blog, but it never occurred to me to have someone teach me how to get started! (palm of hand smacks forehead) I have been at it for three or so years, learning as I go. Pop over sometime,if you like: thyrkas@wordpress.com
Congratulations on you very fine blog. I will be following you.

  2. Hi Teri -- So glad you visited -- RP backslider or not. I remember the Kristan Lavransdatter books from RP. I never read them, but I hope to some day. They seem to be a favorite of several people. Interesting that your friend would read them even though she disliked them so thoroughly.

I visited your blog and really enjoyed it. I like the Marguerite story particularly. Will that maybe become a book someday?

    1. Hi Vicki ~ thanks for stopping by the blog. Just curious, did you read about Marguerite on Thyrkas' blog,or the Seattle Before Starbucks blog? I think it is on both. I don't know if a book will come from the Marguerite story or not. I have only begun to think of myself as a novice writer in the last few months; I have a LOT to learn about the craft. But thank you for asking : ) Do you have any books in the works?

I am just finishing "The Master Butchers Singing Club by Louise Erdrich. I have never read her before - wow! what a storyteller! Have you read anything by her?

  3. Hi Teri - I think I followed the link to the Seattle blog to read Marguerite. I loved the riding to church in the big car part of the story.

No books in the works at the moment. I may be editing a non-fiction book soon.

I liked "The Master Butchers Singing Club." I've enjoyed several of Erdrich's books, especially "The Beet Queen." Although, it's been so long since I read it that I don't rememer much about it. Maybe it's time for a reread. :-)
